Artist of the day: Elani

Afro urban band Elani have won several fans hearts with their unique sound and energetic lyrics and have over the past year gained massive popularity.

The talented trio is made up of of Bryan Chweya, Maureen Kunga and Wambui Ngugi who met in Nairobi at Alliance Francaise in 2008, quickly becoming close friends and it was not long before they realized their common passion for music and desire to perform brining forth the band name Elani.

The band’s name which is unique and outstanding has a rooted and significant meaning to the band members as Maureen previously explained to Mdundo,

“Elani means light in Giriama. We are seeking to be a light to the world through our music and also to be an anchor to upcoming artists who will be inspired by our music. Look at us as light at the end of a dark tunnel,” she added.

Though they had the push and drive to become artists, it proved difficult for them to penetrate into the crowded mainstream market, however they held various performances in numerous music events pushing fans to ask for more and it was with this persistence from fans that they gave it a try with their single hit debut single“Jana Usiku” that received massive airplay in most radio stations.

They released their debut album 'Barua ya Dunia' in December last year and earlier on today released the video to their second single from the album 'Milele'.
