UGANDA: One on One With DJ Karo

A feminine touch in a male dominated profession meet  Carol aka Dj Karo. She personally changed my view about female djs in Uganda. She is very classic, talented, interesting and very down to earth as the Mdundo team we had an interactive conversation with her she being one of the few successful Female djs in uganda it was intriguing.

Here is an insight on Dj Karo's touch;

Mdundo: When did you start djeeying and what inspired it?

Carol:  I have always been a music lover and appreciator from an early age. As a way to share my playlists, I started the #FridayPlaylist just for the fun of it, and it grew into a huge following with people hitting me up to post my playlist every Friday morning. Noticing that I had many people for a following who backed me up without me being a full deejay, I started to develop a strong interest in being more active and taking deejaying seriously. I came out to launch my deejay career at the Annual Samsung Twitter Party (2012) pulling in large crowds. It was my first ever public and successful gig and it spurred me on to keep deejaying.

Mdundo: How is the life as a DJ?
Carol:There is no woman in the industry who hasn't experienced sexism in some kind or form, but there are also a lot of supportive male dj's. I always try to do my best, but some people’s opinion won’t change as they have prejudices. I've been around the social and entertainment / events industry for quite some time to know that if you are good enough

 it doesn't matter if you are a woman or a man. I've been fortunate to earn the respect of my fellow deejays, musicians and other industry players and thankfully, I am managed by Kinetic Management Group that links me to good corporate gigs, thus helping me build my brand further.”

Mdundo: You are one of the few female DJs in town how is that going for you?
Carol: It's a lovely experience plus the fact that you get paid to do what you love ;-) My biggest break was playing for a crowd of over 5000 people at the Airtel Women's day concert Ft Nyanda (Brick & Lace) plus the one featuring Tiwa Savage. I got overwhelming love from the massive crowds. The dancefloor will always determine how great you are as a dj.

I believe the secret lies in your ability to prove yourself. Props to the female dj's

 Dj Rachel, Dj Ruby, Dj Sheila, Dj Mary Jo, Dj Xzyl

 That have worked just as hard as the men and are dedicated to their craft.

 I applaud and respect what they have accomplished while dealing with negative comments that disregard our work and devalue it with stereotypes and assumptions

Mdundo: Is this a real profession or do u do it part time?
Carol: Fortunately, deejaying is not my main profession. it’s a part time gig.  I love marketing and run a digital & Multimedia agency called M-Idea Ltd, I also currently manage a ladies’ basketball team (A1 Challenge) that participates in the National Basketball league so I limit myself to 2-3 gigs corporate gigs a month, and all my booking are managed by Kinetic Management Group.

Mdundo: where do you usually play from which places should people go to in order to watch you play?

Carol: I don't play form any particular place as I take on only corporate gigs. I play wherever the corporate event venue is.

Despite this being a male dominated proffession she has proved that women can also pull it off.
