14 February 2014
Just like their name suggests, their voices do bring an element of sunlight in one’s life, Sauti Sol (voices of the sun) is one of Kenya’s top acclaimed Afro-fusion band consisting of four members namely Bien-Aime Baraza, Willis Chimano, Delvin Mudigi and Polycarp Otieno. They met in high school and decided to make music professionally in 2005 after completing school.
Bien, Chimano and Delvin previously met in Upper Hill high school where they performed as an accapella music group called Voices in the Light.
They later met Polycarp, the guitarist, at Alliance Française where they would do recurrent performances together and naturally as you would expect formed a band. They first settled for the name,Sauti as the band’s name, but later added Sol-which is Espaniol for “sun”.
Sauti Sol, immediately wrote their first song, Mafunzo ya Dunia,in 2009 and the response was overwhelming, which led them to drop their freshman album,”Mwanzo”; With this new element of music turning heads and building a lot of interest among Kenyans, with their hit song 'Lazizi',becoming a craze among their fans.
Their second album was,Sol Filosofia, with hits like 'Soma Kijana' and 'Coming Home'(which had an extremely moving video). This album, engraved the Band’s name high up in the stars. This in turn got them International attention and with time got to go on International tours, from the U.K to the U.S and did phenomenal on-stage and studio collaborations.
In June 2012, Sauti Sol dropped a self-titled EP and collaborative effort with one of South Africa’s most controversial yet gifted rapper and producer,Spoek Mathambo.
Sauti Sol are obviously one of the best bands we have if not the best, and we hope they keep up with their fresh new sounds and energetic performances.
