Opinion: Why canceling out and judging gospel music videos is wrong
7 February 2014
As much as I may come out as being a little sentimental on this article it’s something that just has to be shared and put out there.
So after spending a huge chunk of money on his Makeke’s video even going as far as travelling abroad for the video shoot, Jimmy Gait may not be the happiest person around since the gospel fraternity has apparently refused to be associated with the new track claiming that it does not depict anything gospel and is too racy.
This comes just a few days after Ringtone’s video was pulled down from YouTube for containing ‘pornographic’ content, however luckily for him it was later put back up.
As an outsider looking in, I understand why gospel artists are put under a lot of scrutiny and pressure since obviously their profession expects them not to preach water and drink wine, but at times the so called ‘watchdog’ role played by the gospel fraternity just pushes things a bit too much.
We are all prone to sin and at times expected to fall off therefore our saved “Brethren” should not assume this huge task of being the judge of what is right or wrong to themselves, the task of deciding what is fit and what is not fit should be left to God alone; This does not mean that all gospel videos produced qualify or depict the intended message but we cannot always turn down videos because there are women present in the track or because of dancing I mean isn’t there a part in the bible where David danced for the lord till all his clothes dropped off?
I am in no way saying that people should dance naked but we cannot always base our judgments on such factors because that's the only factor that could have made them disown the song because after watching the video, personally, I can’t decide whether it qualifies or doesn’t qualify as a “gospel’ song, but one thing I know is that the “gospel” fraternity in the country should let gospel artists do what they want to do. They should be allowed to exploit their full potential knowing that the Good Lord above is watching and not be limited by some earthly rules somewhere.
Even the Bible says that we should not judge others.
In case you still haven’t watched the track follow the link below, what do you think of it?
