UGANDA: Radio & Weasel's "Zuena" gets jazzy rendition
4 March 2016

Mowzey Radio and Weasel’s monster hit Zuena has received a jazzy rendering courtesy of ace guitarist Fred Wallace Walusimbi. Wallace, a producer at the Kampala-based First Love Studios and pioneer member of defunct gospel outfit First Love slows the tempo of the original stripping it of its lyrics. He only retains mentions of the song title on the chorus. It’s strings and his mastery of the fretboard all the way as he shows off his fretwork buoyed by a sublime bass guitar purring by Jazz safari organizer, Tshaka Mayanja-Nkangi, himself a bassist of note. The jazz rendition is testament to the burgeoning jazz scene that has seen top instrumentalists interpret popular songs their way thereby baiting new audiences that may not have warmed to the originals. However, renditions of Uganda’s dynamic duo, jazz or otherwise are a firm favourite among Uganda's instrumentalists and jazz artistes. Their song Neera, another runaway hit has been covered by among others the youthful crooner Richy who gave it a delectable R&B feel.
