Opinion :Why Octoppizo still remains Kenya's top Hip hop artist
30 January 2014
After releasing his track ‘Blackstar’ featuring his four year old daughter Tracy, Octopizzo was on everybody lips with fans praising his daughter Tracy for her sweet and melodic voice that made the song particularly stand out.
Few days later things took a dramatic turn and everybody started accusing Octopizzo of being a thief, since apparently Eminem also has a song titled ‘ Blackstar’ with the same catchy chorus with the exact voice that Tracy was singing in.
Hip hop fans took to social networking sites such as facebook and twitter to utter their disappointment towards Octopizzo and his daughter Tracy for lying to them with an Eminem song.
Ofcourse out of curiosity and for the ability to be able to make proper judgement myself,i had a listen to both the tracks and alas!!! It is true, American rapper Eminem did the the same song under the same exact title ‘Blackstar’ with the exact same chorus and beats in which he features T.I .
I agree with the fans that he may taken some material from the track and even beats, but Octopizzo’s lyrical prowess comes out in the song very well, he might have 'stolen' the lyrics from Eminem but that does not mean that Octopizzo lacks content.
What makes the song a big hit is Octopizzo's punch lines rather than the chorus which Tracy appears to be singing along to; how Octopizzo goes around his rhymes just proves the point that Octopizzo is one of the most lyrically talented rappers in the game.
Real hip hop fans will understand that this is not the first time such a thing is happening in the hip hop world, all the great artists including the likes of Jay-Z and Kanye West have been doing that for a very long time, picking classical song and turning them into hip hop tracks with the same flow and beats, does that make Jay and Kanye less talented?
Octopizzo’s ability as a rapper should be gauged by his lyrical prowess and not by a simple shared chorus, with the hits that Octo keeps churning out with each passing day, it is without doubt that he is one of the greatest rappers in Kenya.
