KENYA:"Just Because I'm Singing in a Cute Outfit Doesn't Make Me a Prostitute" - Victoria Kimani Disgusted by the Lack of Respect For Female Entertainers

In the developed World, women in the entertainment world are often sold to the audience as sex symbols and are often seen in clothing that enhances their femininity.

This is a style that African publicists have started adopting in the entertainment industry to improve the image or make female singers/entertainers more popular in a male dominated Africa. But as it turns out, doing this also comes with some undesired effects as well.

Recently Nigerian-based Kenyan singer Victoria Kimani spoke to Nigerian Magazine, OloriSuperGirl, and expressed her deep concern of the disrespect and negativity that women in the industry often face.

“People need to start respecting female entertainers, presenters, actors, artists, models, dancers, businesswomen, PR, managers, PAs, singers, stylists, DJs, designers and generally all positions in the entertainment field in Africa,” she said.

While male entertainers are accorded all due respect and compensated quite well for their work, Victoria says it’s quite the contrary for women in the business.

“The amount of negativity, rumors, gossip, assumptions, judgment, hypocrisy, threats and over all evil eye that is cast towards these particular women is out of this world! NO!! Just because I’m a female doesn’t mean I work for free!! NO! Just because I’m a businesswoman with standards doesn’t make me a bitch.”

She also feels that women are judged more harshly when it comes to their personal lives, especially who they are dating or how they dress.

“Yes, If I want to date someone that’s A.) My business and B.) Up to my better judgement on who I want to invite into my life C.) It’s complicated. Just because I am singing to you in a cute outfit on stage and on your TV does not make me a prostitute.”

“There are too many people praying for me; for me to fall into the hands of the ENEMY so freely and easily. I work DAMN hard.

“I have been working on, dreaming about, planning for, building towards, sweating, crying, praying, waiting for, lost friends, faced loneliness, looked stupid, hated on, sabotaged, made mistakes, been under-rated and still raise up and be THE BADDEST.

“I respect ME… I LOVE ME….I’m Extremely Proud of me … And I respect YOU and Love you too. Respect the grind and go get yours too!” she concluded.
