New femcee poised to take over the throne

For a long time the Kenyan music scene remained short of female rappers but over the last two years or so things have taken a new turn.

A new crop of female emcees have hit the male dominated field and it looks like there may be room for more and more.

Sugar is one of the newest popular rappers, coming out strong and clearly stating that she is in the industry to stay and empower fellow femcees. The rapper has, however, remained underground since 2011 until early this year when she started attaining publicity.

“I want to start a movement for girls and strengthen female rappers in the music industry both local and international. Currently I am trying to conceptualize an idea on how to start a mentorship program for girls in the slums because I feel that should be done,” Sugar told Mdundo on Wednesday.

The rapper is a passionate and delightful woman and says she will stop at nothing to make sure her voice is heard and dreams turned into realities. She came through with her his single ‘Do it Like’ last month produced by Phoenix Records.

The track has been featured on several Mdundo daily and weekly charts.
