The Gengetone wave, once thought to be fading, is back with a bang, and Ethic Entertainment is leading the charge. The group that pioneered the Gengetone movement is proving that the genre is alive and thriving with the release of two chart-topping tracks in just a few weeks—Ukitaka and Zama.
"Ukitaka" – A Record-Breaking Comeback
Released two weeks ago, Ukitaka is a testament to Ethic's enduring appeal. The song has amassed an impressive 1.2 million views on YouTube in just two weeks, reminding fans why Ethic is considered the face of Gengetone. Its catchy beats, unapologetic lyrics, and vibrant energy capture the essence of the genre that first took Kenya by storm in 2018. The track has not only dominated airwaves but has also sparked a wave of TikTok trends, affirming its status as a cultural phenomenon.
"Zama" – The Momentum Continues
Hot on the heels of Ukitaka, Ethic dropped Zama just yesterday, and it’s already creating buzz. The track features the group’s signature playful lyricism and infectious rhythms that have fans dancing once again. While it’s still new, Zama showcases Ethic’s consistency and commitment to keeping Gengetone relevant in an ever-evolving music scene
Ethic’s resurgence is not happening in isolation. Other players in the Gengetone scene are also stepping up, breathing new life into the genre. Ochungulo Family, another key pioneer of the movement, recently released Zero Distance. The track blends witty lyricism with groovy beats, proving that the group still has what it takes to keep fans entertained.
The revival of Gengetone comes at a time when some had written it off, citing stagnation and a lack of innovation. However, the recent releases by Ethic and Ochungulo Family are a reminder that the genre still has untapped potential.
