The first time I heard Minz’s music was in 2020 when he dropped a guest verse on Fasina and Tim Lyre’s 3-pack single, 3 STRAINS. A couple of months later, in December, he released BDMN, an impressive record that felt perfect for closing out the year. Since then, Minz has had an incredible run, dropping back-to-back hit singles, including WOWO REMIX featuring BNXN and Blaqbonez in 2023, Sokoto featuring Zinoleesky, Shadow, and WAP featuring Davido—marking the lead singles on his debut album, BY ANY MINZ. Four years after first hearing this amazing talent, we caught up to chat about his highly anticipated debut album, BY ANY MINZ, and the conversation was nothing short of insightful.

For those who don’t know, Minz is no newcomer. The 29-year-old singer-songwriter has been consistently releasing music since 2016, performing at shows both locally and internationally, while also building a growing community of listeners who amplify his releases. When asked what he hopes his listeners and fans take away from BY ANY MINZ, he emphasised that his priority is for them to have good-quality music to enjoy, but also to catch the message of resilience and valid dreams. “I’ve been in the game for a while, and people have been rooting for me. Now that my debut album is dropping and everything is coming together, I just want to use this album to encourage everyone, because in a sense, this feels like my contribution to the world. Keep going. I want someone to say, in some years, that they listened to BY ANY MINZ, and that’s why they kept going.”

Minz’s album, BY ANY MINZ, takes listeners on a musical journey filled with diverse sounds and emotions. The album opens with the reflective track, “Revelations,” followed by highlife-inspired songs like “Shadow” and “Wo Wo.” “Diallo” features a catchy melody  “Ja” and the dance-inducing “Do” showcase Minz’s versatility. Tracks like “Lon3ly” and “Disembark” close out the project. Throughout the album, Minz expresses gratitude, challenges negativity, and celebrates African culture, offering an immersive experience for listeners.

For Minz, working on this project for years taught him some tough lessons—like how to navigate human relationships, how to get things done, and how to see something through. “I had drive, I had something I was trying to achieve, and I was able to achieve it. I’m a perfectionist, but I love this album so much—no imperfections, and this is how it’s meant to be. I also learned to let go, and just let things happen as they should... Sometimes life brings things your way, and you have to adapt,” he said when asked about the lessons he learned while working on the project.

Making a debut album with 14 tracks is no easy feat, and it definitely came with its challenges. One of the toughest, for Minz, was having to work with different people in different zones and trying to sync up schedules. Another challenge was how the process revealed which people were truly passionate about the art and which were not. But through it all, these experiences inspire him to keep doing more and aiming higher.

With the release of BY ANY MINZ, Minz has unlocked a new level of stardom. He has defied the odds stacked against him and captured his new perspective on life and how he explores the details of his reality. The album is a confirmation of his undeniable talent, resilience, and the manifestation of getting his flowers and accolades BY ANY MINZ necessary. 

“Just keep grinding. Don’t stop. Don’t ever stop believing in yourself. Keep elevating and keep levelling up in whatever you do.”
