Hiphop on top as Jay Z leads in the 2014 Grammy Nominations

Jay Z led the pack in the race for Grammy Awards earning nine nominations including one for Rap Album and two nominations in the Rap/Sung Collaboration category but he failed to get a nomination in any of the three major awards (Song of the Year, Album of the Year & Record of the Year).

Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Pharrell and Justin Timberlake also scored big earning seven nominations apiece.
Other top nominees include Daft Punk, Drake, Lorde, Bruno Mars, and Taylor Swift.

Two of this year's chief overlords of music and controversy - Kanye West and Miley Cyrus - both came up short. Cyrus' album, "Bangerz" didn't make the Sept 30 cutoff for eligibility and the summer hits "We Can't Stop" and "Wrecking Ball" failed to garner any nominations.

Kanye West who has 21 previous Grammy honors made out with only two recognitions. Despite being a potential favorite for Album of the Year and Song of the year, West was only a finalist for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song.

The Recording Academy announced the nominations Friday during a concert at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles and the 56th Grammy Awards will be held on Sunday Jan 26 2014.

When the winners are announced in January, hip-hop acts will almost certainly be well-represented.

Whether hip-hop music will be is yet to be determined.
