Every year on June 3rd, Uganda observes Martyr's Day, a solemn celebration remembering the lives and sacrifices of the country's martyrs. What is Martyr's Day?
In Uganda, the day known as Martyr's Day honors the valor and sacrifice made by the twenty-three Anglican and twenty-two Catholic Ugandan Martyrs who, between 1885 and 1887, firmly defended their Christian faith. These martyrs, men and boys, bravely refused to give up their religious beliefs in the face of persecution and death at the hands of King Mwanga II. In Uganda's history, their steadfast adherence to Christianity in the face of persecution serves as a timeless testament to their faith and fortitude.

When is Martyr's Day Celebrated?
Every year on June 3rd, Uganda observes Martyrs' Day, a historically significant event that honors the execution of the Ugandan Martyrs at Namugongo, close to Kampala.

The History of Martyr's Day:
When Christianity grew in Uganda in the late 19th century and attracted adherents from the royal court and beyond, Martyr's Day was established. Concerned about the spread of Christianity, King Mwanga II ordered the persecution and killing of Christians.

As soon as they arrive, sermons, hymns, and prayers are offered, with an emphasis on the martyrs' sacrifice and the ongoing influence of their religion.

Martyr's Day is marked by religious ceremonies as well as storytelling sessions, traditional dances, and cultural events honoring Uganda's Christian past. In addition, pilgrims may engage in charitable giving and volunteer work to commemorate the martyrs' selflessness and sacrifice.
