Best Kenyan music newcomers in 2013!!
9 December 2013
2013 has been a brilliant year for up and coming artists to hit the music industry.
What we have seen from the newcomer artists of this year is a progressive step in music, breaking the mould and trends of musical style and creating their own.
Newcomers to the Kenyan music scene have made their mark already and maybe they are some of the artists to watch come 2014. Some have been around but 2013 saw their biggest breakthrough.
Check the list below
#1 Jo-1 – No one knew the Sakata judge could actually sing but she surprised us this year with her debut single ‘Chiziqa’ ft Fisherman. The Bermudian dancehall queen signed under Grandpa Records is set to release other songs in the coming months. Check out her profile and download the song on Mdundo.
#2 Bahati – Just 19 years of age, Kevin Bahati released his first song last year but came as a disappointment to him because the song didn’t get much airplay has he expected. 2013 has been his year winning the ‘New Artist of the Year’ Groove Award. With ‘Machozi’ & ‘Mama’, Bahati’s career looks promising.
#3 Fena Gitu – I know she’s been around for a while but Fena has now become a household name in 2013. The soul star had a couple of songs the last few years but ‘Brikicho’ & ‘Dutch’ ft Kagwe have had the biggest breakthrough this year.
#4 Majirani – ‘Hivo Ndio Kunaendanga’ you know this song right? The first verse is by Majirani and going by the sick flow in his lyrics I foreseen next year being a good year for him.
#5 Kagwe Mungai – ‘I’m not a local artist’, once said Kagwe. The music graduate from Southampton is not a starter in terms of music but he’s made his name know in the industry this year. With Dutch & Bad Girls released this year, I guess in 2014 he’s taking over the industry.
#6 Sage – everybody is taking about her being the new superstar in the music industry. Her biggest songs are ‘So Alive’ ft Octopizzo & ‘Dumbala’ ft Jay A. she’s a star in the making.
#7 Femi 1 Shiko & Wangeci – hope you’ve listed to Ligi Soo Remix then you know who these two femcees are. Thanks to the remix now I know who to watch for in 2014.
#8 Kanana – Props to Rabbit for discovering great talent. With her song ‘Ni Mapenzi Tu’ ft Rabbit topping charts I think the music industry should be ready for Kanana as she’s about to take over.
#9 Victoria Kimani – she came in with a bang and being the only Kenyan who performed at the Channel O VMA’s she’s made a mark already.
