Easter Holidays : A Time of Fasting, Prayer and Celebrations.

Easter Holidays are a special time for Christians around the world. It commences forty days before the Easter weekend ; that is marked by a day known as ‘Ash Wednesday .’During this period , christians fast , and pray in preparation for the celebration to mark the resurrection of Christ. It is a time to reflect on the sacrifice that Jesus made , and the hope of an everlasting life yet to come . We need to dive deep into the three most important days of the holidays , to get the scope of what they entail.
Good Friday.
Good Friday is a christian holiday that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ . It falls on the Friday before Easter Sunday . Christians regard the day as the most solemn day of the christian calendar. It is a time of reflection and prayer ,and many take the time to contemplate on the crucifixion . On the day , most of the christian community hold special services and some observe fast . In the Roman Catholic Church , the day is commemorated with a three hour procession carrying an icon of Jesus as they recite The Rosary , with an inclusion of other prayers used during the day . This marks the last hours of Jesus Christ , journey from the city of Jerusalem to the Calvary .
In England , the Royal Navy traditionally holds a ceremony where the ‘body of Christ’ , mostly represented by a large wooden cross is lowered into the sea and later retrieved .
The Saturday prior to Easter Sunday , most christians attend a midnight mass / service , known as ‘ Easter Vigil .’ This service aids in the spiritual preparations of christians to the rising of Jesus Christ .
Easter Sunday
The day is also referred to as the ‘Resurrection Sunday.’ The day marks the resurrection of the Lord from the dead. A victorious day , to mark his defeat to death , sin and all things evil. On Easter Sunday , christians attend church services , sing hymns , and celebrate the message of new life and hope that is represented by this occasion . Being a public holiday , family and friends gather to enjoy picnics , each other's company , with gifting of Easter eggs to children.
Easter Monday.
It is an extension of the Easter Sunday celebrations . Different countries mark the day with different traditions of their own . In most cases the day is commemorated by attending church services , while the rest of the community spend the day with family and friends .In Germany , it entails an array of outdoor activities like egg rolling contests . While The United Kingdom , mark by playing pranks on friends .
As much as Easter Weekend is universally celebrated on relatively the same days, there are other countries that commemorate them on different days.They are the Eastern Christians i.e. The Orthodox Church . Their Easter celebrations come exactly a week and half , from the normal christian calendar . They include Ukraine , Russia, Romania .
On the other hand, Greece and Cyprus , also held their celebrations on different days. This is as a result of their different traditions and calendars .
Passover Night .
The Jewish community do not celebrate the Easter Holiday but do have a special occasion known as the ‘ Passover Night’. This happens a couple of days before the Easter Weekend .
The Passover Night or the ‘ Pesach ‘ commemorates the story of the Israelites escape from slavery in Egypt .It is celebrated for eight days and is marked with performance of rituals , reading the story of Exodus and eating symbolic foods with the incorporation of four cups of wine .
