EXCLUSIVE: Songstress VQEE Proves That Old Can Still Sound Majestic

I keep trying out records presented as "Zilizopendwa mash-up" and will try out more, but until now the only artist who strikes the right note and tone for me is VQEE.

I don't know much about the Denmark-based Kenyan songstress, but it strikes me that she comes straight out of the non-existing legendary golden crop of East African musicians, so she is more or less bound to sound authentic.

I love to recommend. Pole Musa feat Kibby under The Z Projekt.

She has managed to keep the crucial traditional rhythm of that song, giving it a modern twist which does not deform the base of original.

The song has been put together by Claus Seest, a Danish producer currently spearheading the project with various East African artists including VQEE, Mzungu Kichaa and Daudi Kabaka Jr.

Is this your first song?

“Noo, I’ve previously recorded an album called Halua, that was in 2010. It features traditional Kenyan music blended with Afro-pop. It’s actually Seest who produced it”.

What’s your idea of beautiful music?

“I listen to different genres, and I choose the music that will inspire the next part of my story. When an artist is telling their own story and touching souls, that’s beautiful music”.

Something about The Z Projekt?

“It’s a celebration of Kenya’s golden music. We’ve teamed up with several other talented artists to set out a few more twisted versions of Kenyan classics. In the next few weeks we shall release Malaika (originally by Daudi Kabaka), The Z Projekt version”.
