Forgive me if I feel like I deserve some type of appreciation for pointing out that rapper Jay A is a crucial part of the Kenyan music scene. Why you ask? Well, if you have been following the Mdundo Music Awards information keenly, then you ought to know that he’s massive hit ‘Dumbala remix’ alongside the Grandpa family is up for nomination in the most downloaded hip hop singles and for this reason we caught up with this music genius to know what he thought of his nomination:

How do you feel about this nomination?

I’m sincerely grateful for this opportunity and I’d like a big chunk of this praise to go to my fans who made it possible for the song to rank on the nomination list by downloading it.

Do you feel like you deserve the spot on the nomination list?

The song was a massive hit back in 2015 so with that into consideration I do feel like I earned the nomination as much as I didn’t expect it. Am still excited about the opportunity and wouldn’t mind bagging the award.

What’s your take on the Kenyan hip hop scene? What takes the day; quality or quantity?

I personally feel like the hip hop scene is lacking but artists are putting their best foot forward nonetheless. As for quality versus quality I personally think it’s a bit of both. In hip hop content is necessary, but at the same time quality is utterly important. There are artists who are lucky enough to go platinum with just one song but others have to put out albums before there are recognized; so with the two contrasts I feel that both elements are crucial.

Any advice to upcoming hip-hop artists hoping to get a nomination in the next Mdundo Awards?

Keep pushing and never let go. Persistence and a good relationship with your fans are key important!
