Throwback Thurs: Best Kenyan remixes of all time!
28 November 2013
Remixes have become a norm in the Kenyan music scene for a long time now and basically they always include ‘featured’ artists and additional new vocalists or musicians to the original mix of a song.
Some if not all of the original verses of the song are always maintained but with a different arrangement order depending on how the producers decide to remix the song.
On our throwback feature today we remind you of some of the best remixes of all times in the Kenyan music industry.
#1 Chapaa Remix – Abbas, Nikki, DNG, Nazizi, Wyre, Prezzo & Cannibal. Originally done by Abbas, this has to be my favourite song ever and definitely not your usual track remix.
It was like no other seven big artists and different genres of music; Crunk, Reggae, RnB and Kapuka all blended together to be in one track.
#2 Banjuka Remix – DNA, Big Pin, Jimwat, Bishop, DNG, Prezzo and Kaya. The original song by DNA was a massive club banger and all over the TV and Radio stations, and to the match the standards of the original song, DNA had to bring in the best in the industry and for sure they didn’t disappoint.
#3 Jogoo Remix – Wakimbizi ft Klepto, Ulopa, Fundi Frank, Jerry Jo, VBO and Bobby Mapesa.
‘Ningekuwa jogoo jogoo wee-nadhani ningepata yule dame mi nataka’ tell me you cant remember this tune?In my own opinion I think Bobby Mapesa held it down on this remix.
#4 Wee Kamu – Nonini and Juacali. Explicit content started way back with the Godfather of Genge Nonini always holding it down,so Collo and STL are not the first ones.
The original song was done by Nonini and he decided to do a ‘Genge Remix’ featuring Juacali who came in and hands down killed it.
#5 Big Shot Remix – Madtraxx, Porgie, Nameless, Collo, Prezzo, Frasha, Sana & Dj Stylez. It was a remix for the big shots you can tell. Props to Sanaipei Tande for being the only chic and she gave the men a run for their money with a killer verse.
#6 Gyal Remix – Shavey & Slice, Robba, Collo, UB, Askofu, Filter, Rex, Ulopa & Side B.
The original song was a massive tune locally and internationally in Jamaica and though I was a bit disappointed when the remix was released ,Collo, Robba and Askofu gave their best the rest could have done better. My two cents though.
Bonus
#7 Saluti – Daddy Owen, Emmy Kosgei, Kambua, Masha Mapenzi, Carol Nanjie, Jackie Kotira and Esther Wahome.
This isn’t necessarily a remix but the combination of all the different languages in one song was Amazing. I sing along to most of the languages and I’ve no idea what they mean. but as they say music is universal.
