Qatar will be making history as the first host nation to stage the world cup in the months of November and December. Since the World Cup tournament falls smack in the middle of the European club season, rather than during the off-season which has been customary, it means any players injured in the weeks leading up to the World Cup are in danger of missing the tournament.

Here are some who are already out with long-time injuries.
Paul Pogba is set to miss out on France's attempt to defend the global title. The midfielder who joined Juventus from Manchester united at the beginning of the season is currently nursing a knee injury which will force him to follow the world cup on t.v. France will also miss the services of Ngolo Kante who has been out for the bigger part of this season nursing a hamstring injury.
England will be at least one right-back down this winter with James set to be out for at least eight weeks after injuring his knee during a Champions League match. 25-year-old Ben Chilwell will also miss out on the world cup, this is after he picked a hamstring injury in Chelsea's champions league encounter against Dynamo Zagreb.
Portugal is set to miss out on the services of Diogo Jota and Pedro Neto as Georgino Wilnadjum misses out on the Netherlands squad for the world cup with a tibia fracture.
Germany’s Timo Werner, Romelu Lukaku of Belgium, Paulo Dybala of Argentina and Kyle Walker of England are other notable stars who will miss the world cup with injuries.
