When you mention pop music in Zambia, it sounds more of a mirage but thanks to Emily Hakoola, the paradigm shift is here. The talented Hakoola is aiming at becoming Zambia’s next pop star just like Wezi Heartsound won Zambian’s over with her beautiful soul music.

The ‘Heavy Like’ hit maker recently made her return to music and she is all out to leave a mark of success in the less sang about genre. Zambia’s RnB, Dunka, Rap and Afro Pop genres top the chart list - with a number of reputable female artists - but none for pop.

The pop genre, on the other hand, has never had a very strong brand but Hakoola is positioning herself to be the next Madonna – world renowned queen of pop music.

The uniqueness of Hakoola’s situation lies in the fact that she is not even making an effort to be Zambian. For example, she isn't concerned about how she sounds in Zambian. Yet there is no visible difference between her and Adele or Sia when they are on stage together.
