5 Kenyan Female Rappers who’re Revolutionizing the Male Dominated Hip-Hop Industry

Since its inception, the hip-hop industry has always been perceived as a male genre. Today, the world is slowly but surely changing and currently we have more female mainstream rappers including Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, and Meghan Thee Stallion, who are breaking barriers and revolutionizing the male dominated hip-hop industry.

Luckily, the revolution is not only in the States, but locally too where female artists have been doing their part and changing the industry here. The rappers who include; Femi One, Maandy, Petra, Ssaru, and Silverstone Barz have been paving way for the future female rappers who have hope in making it in the hip-hop industry.

This article reviews some of their recent achievements in their music careers which are revolutionizing the male dominated hip-hop industry:

Femi One

Last year, celebrated female rapper Femi One took the country by storm after dropping her mainstream hit song ‘Utawezana’ featuring Mejja. ‘Utawezana’ was a fun and interactive hip-hop jam in which Femi One and Mejja went back and forth while delivering well-versed lyrics. In addition to her success in 2020, Femi One recently dropped her debut album dubbed ‘Greatness’. The fourteen-track album features several collaborations with both upcoming and renowned artists including Sanaipei Tande and Jadi from Kenya.

Maandy

Fast-rising Kenyan artist Maandy is on her way to revolutionize the industry after announcing that she would be dropping her upcoming album dubbed ‘Frisky’ very soon. The announcement follows her recent mainstream success with her hit song dubbed ‘Sirudi Home Remix’ featuring Ndovu Kuu and Breeder LW. ‘Sirudi Home’ is an upbeat hip-hop jam about not wanting the party to be over. In addition to ‘Sirudi Home’, Maandy is also doing well with her other recent jams dubbed ‘Ukoo’ and ‘Sultan’.

Petra

Getting an international collaboration is not an easy feat for any artist. However, last year Petra took the country by surprise, after being featured by celebrated dancehall star Vybz Kartel in his hit song dubbed ‘Turn Off The Light’. The jam which premiered last year in November has already hit over a million views on YouTube.

Ssaru

She is one of the most sought after female rappers in the country. Her dynamism has made her the go to female rapper in the country. Over the past year, she has featured several gengetone hits. She is consider the top female rapper in the gengetone genre. Her recent music releases ‘Zitoke’ and ‘Rhumba Ya Ssaru’ have been doing very well and already have hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube.

Silverstone Barz

Silverstone Barz is out here making moves with her recent music releases. Recently, she featured celebrated Kenyan artist Victoria Kimani in her hit song ‘Africana’. The song is all about celebrating being Africans and specifically Nairobians. She has also worked with other artists that include Khaligraph Jones, reckless, Breeder and others on Khali Kartel 3 that took the country by storm.
