How Wizkid Inspired DJ Maphorisa to Take Amapiano Seriously

Five years ago, Nigerian pop star Wizkid visited South Africa while in the company of the big boys in Mzansi music industry such as DJ Maphorisa. It is then that he heard his first Amapiano hit and he couldn’t help but speak highly of the genre.

Recently, DJ Maphorisa narrated that this experience in Moloko, Pretoria challenged him to focus more on creating Amapiano hits. According to DJ Maphorisa, back then, Wizkid had just listened to Calvin Fallo’s ‘Wololo Remix’ and loved it so much.

Wizkid was reportedly so amazed that together with Burna Boy, Maphorisa, Kabz De Small and Cassper Nyovest, they recorded ‘Sponono’ and released it.

“Wizkid put me on Amapiano Facts. The first Amapiano song Wiz heard was by Calvin Fallo Wololo Remix in moloko PTA 5 years ago, dats when Sponono by Kabza was recorded n I didn’t know Kabza dat time,” he told his fans in a tweet.

Maphorisa, also nicknamed Phori says Wiz asked so much about the sound that was giving him goosebumps. That’s when he decided to take Amapiano seriously after watching how it impressed the Nigerian star singer.

“He asked me wats this sound its giving me goosebumps… Dats when I really took Amapiano serious Listening ke good skill Crossed fingers. Call me Madumane Lawd Ya Di Piano,” he said.

 DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small are currently the godfathers of Amapiano tanks to the effort they have put in popularizing the genre.
