Amapiano artists in South Africa are set to be rewarded thanks to a new award show that focuses entirely on them.

In a statement released last week, South African Amapiano Music Awards organisers announced that the inaugural award gala will be held this year and shared a list of nominees.

According to the organizers, the move to launch an independent award show was informed by lack of enough recognition for Amapiano artists.

“The biggest genre in the country now has its own award show. Congratulations to all the nominees,” the body captioned a list of nominees for the awards this year.

“For its first instalment the governing body considered artists’ contributions to the genre and musical projects that were released from January 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021,” it added in a separate statement on its website.

The award ceremony will be held every year starting 2021. What’s unique about these awards is that they incorporated artists who are necessarily not on the Amapiano genre. They were classified as ‘Friends of Amapiano’ because they have helped grow the genre.

Artists like Cassper Nyovest, Mi Casa, Riky Rick, Oskido, Major League among others have been nominated on this criteria.

Best Amapiano Street Dancer were also nominated by virtue that their talents helped propel the genre more in the streets. Winners will receive R10 000, with the exception of the Amapiano Song of the Year winner who will be awarded R50 000.

Some of the top artists nominated in the various categories include; Kabz De Small, DJ Maphorisa, Focalistic, DJ Stokie among others.
