One on one with Gospel chart topper Bahati
12 November 2013
19 year old gospel artist Bahati is undeniably at the top of his game having been in the music industry for a record 10 months, yet being able to achieve that which many artists strive for so many years .
Having had a rough childhood as an orphan growing up in mathare slums ABC children’s home, he has overcome adversity and is using his god given talent and skills to make it to the top.
I had a chance to talk with him and get to know him better here is how it went;
Mdundo: How would you describe yourself?
Bahati: I am a Passionate, God fearing kid.
M: What motivates you as an artist?
B: It has always been my dream to change how my life is and at also to impact my society so music has given me this platform.
M: How would you describe your music?
B: I do Bongo gospel
M: Why did you choose this genre?
B: Because I have always been very passionate about Swahili and also my aim is to reach out to all people
M: As an artist what have been some of the challenges you have faced?
B: It was very hard to make people believe in me and the kind of music I do it really took time for them to accept.
Of course there were also financial constraints.
M: Who are some of the artists you look up to and why?
B: well I like Rose Muhando because she is passionate about singing directly to God and her music is real. She has no compromise.
I also like Justin Bieber because at such a young age he has been able to achieve so much.
M: What do you think would surprise people most about you?
B: (laughs) the fact that I have only ever dated one person.
M: What made you realize you wanted to pursue music?
B: After I cleared high school and didn’t have the rescourses to go to the university music was my escape since it is something I am very passionate about.
M: Is there anything special you hope to be able to achieve as an artist?
B: I want to go international in the next two years and also to be one of the best artists in East Africa.

M: What has been your biggest break in your music career so far?
Winning the groove awards for new artist of the year it was quite humbling.
M: What should fans watch out for from you?
I’m currently in studio working on a new song called Lover so they should watch out for that.
