OPINION: Changing demand for live music, bye bye playback!

A live performance can be the most exciting experience for both the artist and fans during an event because it creates an element of personalization and connection between the two parties.

How times have changed! Gone are the days when majority Kenyan artists used to do playbacks when performing at a concert and not doing much other than miming song lyrics they recorded before.

A live performance is not only entertaining but also hearing all the instruments as they make that one beat is something many people are beginning to love.

Niko Na Safaricom Live is one such event that has embraced this new trend with artists such as Juliani, Daddy Owen, P-Unit, Kidum, Octopizzo, Avril among others changing performance style to live.

Going by the number of fans who attend these countrywide concerts especially the last two in Machakos and Eldoret then you agree that times have changed and the audience gets to like live music.

Blankets & Wine is another monthly event where artists must perform live and with that the audience feels satisfied getting value for their money. Other similar events include Thursday Nite Live at Tree House and several organized weekly concerts in clubs around town that have given artists a platform to showcase their performance skills.

Most musicians might consider doing playbacks mainly because it’s cheap compared to live performance where you have to pay for all the equipment and probably hire a band not forgetting that you’ll spend a lot time practicing.

For any artist out there who wants to grow career wise in terms of music in the current industry, investing time and money to perfect the art of performing live will prove to be worth it at the end of it all.

With the standards set so far by some of the artists, very soon will say bye bye to those artists still stuck in doing playbacks and with all these live concerts then getting a chance to perform will be hard for them if they can’t go live! Plus as an artist, you cannot afford to be lazy in the art that brings food to your table and makes you who you are.
