Joanne Ball: I consider Grandpa my family

Sakata judge Joanne Ball Burgess, better known as JO-1, has made her debut into music with her new single ‘Chiziqa’ featuring coast artist Fishaman.

The song which can be classified as dancehall tune was produced by Grandpa Records and as Joanne shares, she considers Grandpa her family.

“I find working with Grandpa Records very refreshing because they are efficient and hardworking. Since I’m not Kenyan I had some trouble getting people to sign me to their labels but they were very friendly and accepting and I just consider them a good family," she told Mdundo.

JO-1 who is an experienced dancer, songwriter and children’s book author was born and raised in Bermuda only relocating to Kenya two years ago.

Her experience working and living in Kenya drew her inspiration to release her first single, but the story behind the song itself is quite interesting,

“I wanted to do a song about letting loose and going crazy but I wasn’t sure what it would be. One night while out with my friends we laughed and joked about ‘winding from your waist’ in the club and I jokingly promised to produce a song called “Wind from your Waist” which essentially is Chiziqa.

The dancehall tune which is catchy and addictive, is being received well by fans all across East Africa and in Bermuda according to JO-1 and she plans to keep releasing more songs next year.

“I’ll do another release in February but right now I’m focusing on doing my Chiziqa tour, and since I’m a dancer I want my performances to be different and special," Joanne added.
