South Africa Music:Top 5 Amapiano tracks by Non-South Africans

By Ian Jacob

Nobody - Patoranking
When the gqom wave hit the Nigerian music scene in 2018 with "Open," Patoranking was one of the biggest winners. The singer collaborates with C-Tea, a Ghanaian-born South African rapper, on “Nobody,” which is taken from his third album, Three. Patoranking contributes his distinctive patois to this instrumental, which combines reggae and amapiano rhythms.

Woman - Rema
One of the first Nigerian records to tap into the South African phenomenon was Rema's Ozedikus-produced album, which was released during Rema's run as Apple's Up Next in June 2020. In "Woman," the 20-year-old accepts his irrational attraction to the opposite sex, regardless of her physical characteristics. As he sings "If them no do, no be by coercion," the artist, though describing the uniqueness of his relationships with the various women throughout his life, whimsically discusses the significance of consent.

Squander - Falz
On "Squander," Falz collaborated with Niniola, a veteran of South African subgenres. The album, which was created by Yung Willis, is currently causing a stir in Nigeria. Falz and Niniola's songs, which are sung in Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo, the three main Nigerian ethnic groups, are all about partying and living lavishly with reckless abandon. Falz makes his directorial debut with the visuals, which tells the story of politicians who cheat the system by stealing public funds and hoarding palliatives.

Davido - I Got A Friend
Davido enlists Sho Madjozi and Mayorkun to pay tribute to a number of friends, ranging from his father, Mr Adeleke, to his manager, Asa Asika, and deceased associates such as Pop Smoke, Tagbo, and Olu. In the song "Papa Penny imnghana wa mina," Madjozi acknowledges her friendship with the South African disco legend. Fresh VDM recorded the track, which is featured on Davido's third album, A Better Time.
