Online music challenge is the new phenomenon currently dominating the music industry across the world. In most countries, after an artist releases a song, his/her fans record videos dancing to the jam and sharing them online.

In this article, we review three jams that have gone viral in Rwanda due to online challenges:
Dusuma –Otile Brown ft Meddy
Released in mid-2020, the song did fairly well until the ‘Dusuma’ challenge kicked off on Tik-tok and other online applications. The song went viral on Instagram and other social media sites as music lovers recorded themselves dancing to the jam. The challenge pushed ‘Dusuma’ to be the fifth most viewed song in Africa in the last half of 2020. Currently, the song has over 25 million streams on YouTube less than a year since it was released.

This is Love – The Ben ft Rema Namakula
This classic love song went viral in Uganda and Rwanda after the launch of its challenge on Instagram and Tik-tok. The challenge pushed the song to be one of the biggest jams in the two countries. Currently, the video has over 2.4 million views on YouTube.

Baho - Israel Mbonyi
The 11-minute song which has 1.7 million views on YouTube was propelled by the power of Instagram dance or lip-syncing challenge. The challenge made the song popular and elicited interest especially among the youth.
