Taking a break away from the music scene is not an unfamiliar event. But when that break takes too long it raises a swam full of questions, especially if the people could relate to your type of music. Reason why today we look at avant-garde hip hop crew Kalamashaka, who I think broke the record of the longest hiatus in the Kenyan music scene. Their new video ‘Moi Avenue’ established that they still had the magic in them.

The trio of Kamaa, Roba and Vigeti are the ones behind the the singularity, Kalamashaka. The band dates back to the 1990s and are among the one of the first to rap in the sheng, and one of the first to approach rap consciously by highlighting  Kenyan slum problem in their lyrics. Hence being christened ‘Dandora’s Finest’. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAZthFnOhOU

They became a household name after their ‘Tafsiri Hii’ single back in the 2000s, but quickly stamped their credibility through their megahit, ‘Fanya Mambo’. Take notes any aspiring artist out there, this group dared dream during an age and time when the Kenyan music scene was so sensitive; they gave us the first cool rap song and even went ahead to be the first Kenyan face to be featured on Channel O! Yes, they were that big of a deal! Back then it was slightly short of landing on the moon.

Unfortunately, like the fate of most groups, the wall didn’t stand long. They broke up to reasons that are still vague but lucky for the hip hop industry they are still alive and skilled as ever! And their new jam ‘Moi Avenue’ is clear indication to this. Message induced, skill replete and clear cut visual!

They are back and we hope this time they stay!
