Veteran band singer Ronald Mayinja has been the subject of discussion this week after he was caught on camera smoking weed while performing for youths at one of the political campaigns in Busoga.

Mayinja has come under strong criticism especially from those who hold him in high esteem being one of the elders in the industry.

Speaking during a recent interview, Uganda Musicians Association President Ykee Benda expressed his disgust about the incident, terming it as 'shameful' for a man his caliber.

"It was a bad image and as his younger one, I wasn't happy because he is a leader and an artist we look up to. This was not good especially because he has a strong record as an artist.

"We as artists, we are all mature enough and I believe he will come out to apologise because he is an important part of the history of Ugandan music and I think he should take responsibility before his fans, kids he has mentored and everyone else," he said.

Justifying his action, Mayinja noted that he is not a drug addict, adding that he is working a project whose case study focuses on youths who use weed, and how they can be stopped.

"For them to bring us closer, they had to see us in the same image like them, for them to tell us exactly why they use drugs," he said in an interview with Spark TV.
