OPINION: The Raw Truth That Musicians Need To Know

For any musician who gets into the music industry, predicting how you will be received or rather how your music will penetrate into the market has always been one of the major issues; and for so long most artists have faced the same sort of challenges making the same mistake over and over again but something maybe you may not understand is that music is actually a business.

As an artist you need to understand that your music is a product that is set to be consumed by customers and I believe the best way for you to get into music is to ask yourself this basic question, “what makes me and my music stand out?

Think of it this way if you were in a car and you were driving and you see a cow on the side of the road, you would not stop your car and go like oh my gosh that’s a cow; but if you were driving and you saw a purple cow on the side of the road, you would make a brief stop and go like oh that’s is different, because it is something different, something you have not seen before.

So back to music, what will make your music the purple cow? What will make fans tune into a radio station, listen in to your song and actually make a sigh and go like, this is something I actually want to listen to. As long as you are in this industry and you are aiming to be just like someone else, you will never make it, there can only ever be one you in the music industry, follow your own path and not others path.

Then again if your vision is not in place, do not think you can ever make it. You don’t just go into a studio once, record a single and alas!!It’s a hit you need to actually put in a lot of work and effort and be committed and disciplined; being a musician is not just about being famous, it involves producing quality music or rather in this a quality remarkable product that everyone will want to have.

As Stan Mcleod, Co-founder of Bandwagon once stated, "Know your competition but focus on your own product and how it can be best delivered to achieve market fit. Follow your own path and not others; everyone achieves success in different ways."

Do not aim to be very good, because no one is going to listen to it; aim to be remarkable because when you are remarkable, you capture people’s attention.

I may not be an expert in music but based on my daily interaction and contact with several artists, i believe that this is some valuable advice that will come in handy.
