In the past year, the Konde Gang boss has been hit by several copyright infringement claims. This article traces incidences where Harmonize was on the receiving end over copyright laws.
1. ‘Uno’ copyright claim from Magix Enga
‘Uno’ was the first song off the ‘Afro East’ album. Just days after its release, Kenyan producer Magix Enga launched a copyright claim stating that the singer had used his beats illegally. However, the two parties are believed to have resolved the matter amicably to push East Africa music forward.
2. ‘Hainistui’ copyrightclaim from Mr. Nice
In January, Harmonize landed in trouble after legendary Tanzania singer Mr. Nice accused him of stealing his beats for his song Hainistui. Mr. Nice accused Harmonize of sampling his beats illegally but it is not clear how the issue was resolved.
3. ‘Afro East’ album deleted from streaming platforms
Just a week after dropping the highly anticipated album, it disappeared on major streaming platforms like YouTube. It had emerged that several songs on the album had infringed on copyright regulation. The musician is alleged to have sampled other songs without authorization. The album was, however, later re-uploaded on all digital streaming platforms.
4. 'Amen' copyright claim from Rosa Ree
The song ‘Amen’ by Harmonize was deleted from YouTube after a copyright claim by rapper Rosa Ree. Harmonize dropped the video as part of the seven-day mourning for departed former Tanzania President Benjamin Mkapa. Rose Ree claimed the copyright after Harmonize used the beat from her hit song ‘Kenyor Aleng’.
