Tanzania’s President John Pombe Magufuli on Sunday announced that he will be moving the Copyright Society of Tanzania (COSOTA) from the Ministry of Industry and Trade to the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports.

According to the president, artistes in Tanzania are not being appreciated as required, thus the need to make the change in government.

The president believes that local artistes will be appreciated better under the Ministry of Information under the leadership of Harrison Mwakyembe.

“…. COSOTA… Imesota mno huko, nimeshahagiza waziri mkuu ameshaniletea barua nimesign… Nataka niwaahidi wasanii leo ni Jumapili kabla ifike Jumapili inafuata, nitakuwa nimemaliza hii shughuli… ili hawa vijana waweze kufaidika na usani wao wameteseka siku nyingi, hawawezi kuendelea kuteseka chini ya Chama Cha Mapinduzi,” he said.

This comes a week after Konde Gang’s Harmonize urged BASATA to find a way of appreciating musicians, arguing that local artistes have nothing to show for their hard work.

“…..Tuzo ni kipimo cha msanii yeyote kujua wapi umelegeza. Ili next ukaza ukikosa….!! Zinakufanya ujitambue na ujue levo yako lakini pia zinatia moyo na hamasa ya kufanya kazi @basata.tanzaniax @harisson mwakyembe,” he posted.

This later got the attention of BASATA Deputy Managing Director Emanuel Ishengoma who pointed out that plans are already underway to launch the award scheme.

Ishengoma stated that the body was planning to reach out to local musicians for opinions regarding the fete.
