Uganda Musicians Association president Sophie Gombya officially resigned from her office last month after more than a year of service.

In a statement, Sophie revealed that she quit to join active politics as the Woman Councillor in Kampala capital City Authority.

However, according to the association’s chief Whip Jammie Culture, Sophie quit the position because she could not handle the financial pressure anymore.

"Something happened at the beginning of the lock down from artistes and promoters and we were on so much pressure as UMA. It was too much for her because most artistes were calling from all directions asking for food and money. She could not handle it. She broke down when we were at Mesach's place and she was asking where she would get the food to feed the artistes.

She is hiding behind politics but she could not handle it. We are all volunteers. We cater for our transport plus paying rent. The Ugx. 90 million rent was being paid by us the committee. We do this for the love of music. So she quit because she had sacrificed a lot yet everyone was despising her," Jammie said.

Following her resignation, Sophie announced that she will be handing over to the association’s Vice President Ykee Benda, and Jammie believes the renowned musician can take up this role perfectly.

"He should work hand in hand with people who can help him and also be neutral," Jammie Culture said.
