Uganda Musicians Association president Sophie Gombya has officially resigned from her office after more than a year of service.

In a statement, Sophie noted that she has resigned from the position to join active politics. She is contesting the Woman Councillorship in Kampala capital City Authority.

She noted that she had to resign from her position as the association’s constitution stipulates so.

Gombya noted that following her resignation, she will be handing over to Vice President Ykee Benda and the executive committee with whom she trusts to do a good job.

“My untimely leaving would potentially create some difficulties, but I have confidence in the Vice President UMA Ykee Benda and our executive,” stated Sophie.

She requested to stay for another month following her resignation, so as to help with the handover process.

“I wish to stay for a month following this submission, and I’m happy to help in the transition process and/or assist in training my replacement via video conferencing,” she added.

The Uganda Musicians Association (UMA) is a group licensed by the National Union of Creative Performing Artists and Allied Workers (NUCPAAW), and represents musicians, producers and artiste managers.

It exists to protect, promote and preserve Ugandan music, and also advocates for the interests of its members to the government, the music industry, the media and the public.
