Who is Juliana Kanyomozi?

Juliana Kanyomozi is an award winning female Ugandan musician, songwriter, performer, entertainer and entrepreneur. Known by her stage name Juliana, she has often been referred to by media as the best vocalist in Uganda. She specializes in RnB, Afrobeat and pop music. Due to the way she carries herself, she has become one of the most respected female artistes in Uganda.

Aged 35 years, Juliana Kanyomozi was born on 27th November 1980 in Fort Portal, western part of Uganda and she is a Mutoro by tribe.

Juliana Kanyomozi was raised as a royal in a humble God-fearing home. Very little information is known about his father, but reports indicate that he is a biological brother to the father of the reigning King of Toro Kingdom, King Oyo Kabamba Iguru making her a princess in the kingdom.

Juliana Kanyomozi is the second last born in a family of six children; two girls and four boys. Her only sister, Laura Kahunde is a popular actress and one of her brothers, David died years back. Music has always been a part of her family because the father was a drummer and her grandmother, a vocalist. That explains her talent.

Juliana Kanyomozi started her music career at Namasagali but came onto the scene in the 1990's as part of the I-Jay girl group. Together with Iryn Namubiru, they released a single named 'Vive La Vie'. After they parted ways, Juliana Kanyomozi embarked on a solo career, also doing Karaoke at Sabrina's pub owned by Hope Mukasa.

Her music was mainly in English and her breakthrough came when she started releasing Luganda songs. Her first recorded song came out in 2000. Her collaborations 'Mama Wabaana' and 'Maama Mbiire' with Bobi Wine put her on the map. Juliana Kanyomozi released her first album 'Nabikoowa' in 2005 and 'Kanyimbe' as her second album in 2007. Her latest 11-track music album Bits and Pieces was released in 2018 and it has songs like Omukwano Ogwedda, I Love You, Woman, Wakajanja among others.

Juliana Kanyomozi became the first female artiste to win Artiste of the Year in the PAM Awards 2008 surpassing Bebe Cool, Jose Chameleone and Bobi Wine. She has over ten PAM Awards in her name including Best RnB artiste, Most Inspiring artiste, Best RnB single, Best Female artiste, and Song of the Year in 2005. She also has accolades from awards like HiPipo, Kora Awards, ASFAs, BEFTA, EA Music Awards, Tanzania Music Awards and many more.

What does Juliana do besides music?

In 2008, Kanyomozi made her debut in the film industry acting in Henry Ssali’s Kiwani. In 2009, Juliana Kanyomozi was selected as Tusker Project Fame judge, a post she held until 2013.
