Muthoni the Drummer Queen (MDQ) won a Swiss Award earlier this week as the Best Act French Switzerland and the week was not about to end there for the queen as she has gone on to release one of the most powerful songs we have heard in a while dubbed ‘Power’.
‘Power’ is an anthem for the queens and especially the Kenyan queens. MDQ is asking we not forget that we are queens and the queens that came before us and the work they have done to accord us the stride we pride ourselves in.
MDQ raps through the song with a mix Swahili and English hitting us with the bars strong and unadulterated. She switches flow from fast to slower; from English to Swahili and to the sung part of the chorus and the last hook. The instrumentation is a lot of bass layered on more bass but in a tolerable way and adds more power to the audio.

The video is shot in Macmillan library with different scenes creating different props in the library. The director uses well-toned bright colours for the shots just to blend in well with the colourful nature of what Muthoni and the crew are dressed in, making sure that the video is not blinding.
