Chris Kaiga Leads the Evolution of Gengetone with a Trio of new Releases

Chris Kaiga has also been an artist on his own agenda, with a distinct sound some may have classified him within the Gengetone wave that took over the local music scene last year, but listeners may have missed out on his vibe entirely.

Dropping three tracks at once this Valentine’s Day, Kaiga has elevated his sound, and in many ways introduced listeners to an elevated sound, clever rhymes all with no ass-shaking videos in sight. Kaiga could be the act to bring us out of the murky waters of Gengetone, with sophistication and finesse.

Chain Chain

Kaiga pointed out the idea for “Chain Chain” came about during one of the writing sessions in the studio with his sound Engineer as we were sampling instrumentals to work on. The track has an animated percussion with the triangle standing out backed by an electronic sound, a departure from the bass-heavy beats of gengetone. The overall feel of the track is catchy, with Kaiga’s classic humor peeking through. He raps, “Kaa imeweza imeweza naaa kakienda basi enda nayoooo…. Kitu safi iende Chain Chain, Mali safi iende Chain Chain.” This is the only track in the trio of releases with an official video.

Konkodo

Chris Kaiga collaborates with Kiloriti in the track “Konkodo” which is also far from gengetone, but rather an evolution of the sound. The artist explained that in Arusha “Konkodo” is the sound made when knocking on a door. “Naja kwako, Konkodo konkodo”, Kiloriti’s vocals do well to add dimension to the chorus and hook. This track is a banger.

Next

Chris Kaiga takes a comedic approach in this song while characterizing the different girls in Nairobi. He cheekily chants “Next!” as though in a search for a damsel. “Alinishow I don’t do matatus, kidogo amalize sole za viatu… NEEEXT!”Almost like Tinder, the track could be the theme song for anyone experimenting with online dating at this time. The visualizer visuals are by Frnc.

Meanwhile, Ethic Entertainment just released “Daktari” with their typical content and similar beats. Though they might have the views, garnering over 100K views on YouTube little can be said about the growth of their sound.
