Vanessa Hau Mdee is a Tanzanian singer, rapper, youth activist, television personality and radio host. She is popularly known by her stage name Vanessa Mdee. Vanessa was born on June 7th 1988 in Arusha. She spent most of her early life growing up in New York. She studied and graduated from Arusha Modern High school. She then  attended the Catholic University of Eastern Africa to pursue a Law degree. 

Vanessa Mdee  got her recognition for being the first ever Tanzanian MTV VJ. After becoming a household name in Tanzania, she hosted the Coca Cola Express. While still at MTV, she worked alongside Staying Alive Foundation and their special ambassador Kelly Rowland. She got to visit the Uwanja wa Fisi with the foundation’s HIV prevention initiative.

In 2009 ,Mdee hosted Senses, Sounds and Wisdom with Zantel during the annual Sauti Za Busara intentional Music Festival, showcasing the growing Swahili culture. She hosted the red carpet event for three years in a row.

In 2011 Mdee became the host for 102.5 Choice FM’s The Hitlist. Her new status saw her interview some of the biggest names in the Music Industry : K’naan, Kelly Rowland, Mac Miller,Rick Ross, Ludacris, Miguel, Donald, Naazizi,Xtatic,Stella Mwangi, Camp Mulla, Tay Grin, Teargas and etc.

In the same year, she was MTV’s voice at the 2011 UNAIDS Mali Youth Summit in Bamako. She also participated in the international Conference on HIV and STI’s in Addis Ababa,Ethipia and co-founder STANDWITH under UNAIDS umbrella.

Music Career

Vanessa Mdee started her music career in 2012 after featuring on Ommy Dimpoz’s ‘Me and You'  In January 2013 she dropped her first single dubbed ‘Closer' . It got her massive recognition in the Music Industry . ‘Closer' got her ‘Bongo Pop Song of the Year' at the Kilimanjaro Tanzania Music Awards.  

In 2013 she released her second single ‘Come Over' which got her topping the charts in East Africa. Her new found talent won her R&B Song of the year at the Kilimanjaro Tanzania Music Awards.

At the 2014 Coke Studio season, Vanessa graced the stage with Nigerian act Burna Boy marking her first international collaboration. In October 8th she released another track dubbed ‘Siri' and featured Tanzania songbird Barnaba Elias.

In 2015 she released her fifth single dubbed ‘Nobody but me' and featured South African rapper K.O. Her new found fame got her on stage with popular acts Burna Boy, M. I,  Victoria Kimani, Efya, Skales  and Awilo Longomba at the Eko Atlantic Festival.

Essence hadn’t shot a cover in Africa since 1978. They travelled to East Africa and featured Vanessa Mdee, where she opens up about Tanzania,her music and inspiration.

In 2016 Vanessa Mdee was among the headliners opening for Chris Brown and Wizkid at the Mombasa Rocks festival.

 In 2019 Vanessa Mdee stars as a Judge in the debut season of East Africa’s Got Talent, which began airing in 2019.

She recently featured fellow Tanzanian Rayvanny on hit song 'Bado'

Awards

In 2013 , She won Tanzania Music Awards (Best Afro pop, Best Collaboration). In 2014 she won Tanzania Music Awards (RnB song of the year) and All Africa Music Awards (Best Female Artiste in Eastern Africa). In 2015 she won Tanzania Music Awards (Female Artist of the year,Best Female Entertainer) ,African Muzik Magazine Awards (Best Female Artist East Africa) ,All Africa Music Awards (Best African Pop), Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards (Most Stylish Female Artist East Africa) and Africa Entertainment Awards (Best Female Artist Africa.  In 2016 she won Abryanz Style and Fashion (Most Stylish Female Artiste East Africa).
