Meet dancehall tyro and Khaligraph’s manager Ridiq K Voke

Dancehall is a Jamaican popular music genre that originated in the late 1970s. Initially dancehall was a more sparse version of reggae than the roots style.

With Kenya being a favorite destination for Jamaican artistes, our own musicians have mastered the genre’s elements bringing the vibe home. Artists such Wyre and Redsun have set the standards for other artists in Kenya who are quickly picking up.

We focus on one particular dancehall artist, Ridiq K Voke, who is at a very fast-paced movement to catch up with Wyre and Redsun.

Ridiq got into the music industry in 2003 when he was still in high school and after completion he got a scholarship to the USA for further studies.

“I started doing music back in high school and when I got my scholarship to the US that’s when I really started taking music seriously. Music culture in US is really big and I remember I was a big Bee Gees fan, they are actually the ones who influenced my choice of dancehall,” he told Mdundo.

The artist, who describes his music as a strike between dancehall and hip-hop, has also been Khaligraph’s manager since he got into the industry but he now feels the urge to focus more on his music.

“Managing has always been my top priority but now I think I have attained a great sum of exposure and experience on the music industry so I’m more than ready to get into it,” Ridiq added.

He owns a studio, BIG Beats Afrik, where he currently has three artists signed; Khaligraph, Haze and Cashy.
