This is how you can get signed to Grandpa!

When an artist is seeking to make a breakthrough into the music scene, there is a lot of challenges involved.
First off some are not sure of the exact steps to take to make their music known, secondly they do not know whom to approach and how and lastly some are never certain of what exactly they want to achieve in music.
We had a chance to chat with Grandpa Records CEO Refigah on how they work with new artists at the label.
Most new artists are unaware of how to get signed up to a label. What are the steps taken to join Grandpa?
There is several avenues different labels use, some work best some don’t. At Grandpa what we initially used to do is having artists send their music demos to us then we would listen and determine whether we can work with them or not.
The down side of this method was that if we rejected someone based on the criteria and we happen to produce a hit song thereafter, artists would call in claiming that we either stole their song or concept and this always resulted to conflicts.
So what method have you put in place now?
As a label we decided that it was wise to stop guys from sending in demos but rather have them perform live which is also a better when considering skills and confidence. Every time we have a Grandpa show we give upcoming artists a chance to showcase their skills and if our panel is satisfied with their performance then we take them to join the big family.
So after you have identified such artists what is the next step?
Of course after that you have to go through our contract if you agree to the terms and conditions you sign the contract and we begin working. Usually what happens is that we record a number of songs and out of them we pick one which works best and re produce it bigger and better. We then work through the release process; we do the video and create a launch party as we look for events for you to perform. So an artist is in very safe hands at Grandpa.
And what are some of the qualities you look for in an artist?
We look for someone who has talent but sometimes talent alone is not enough. You need to be disciplined and have a good character. When an artist has an impressive character, they are good to work with.
There you heard it from the horse’s mouth.
