Diamond says the music industry is being 'killed'
25 March 2014
Top Tanzanian artist Diamond Platinumz has accused the organizers of the Tanzania Music Awards 2014 of killing their local music industry and talent.
Baraza La Sanaa La Taifa (BASATA) who are the organizers of the awards, earlier on today released a list of artists and songs which will battle it out in 34 categories on the 3rd of May, however several songs including “Uzuri Wako”, 'Nimevurugwa' and Madee’s “Tema Mate” have been scrapped off from the list with the organizers terming the songs as containing 'explicit content' which is not acceptable in Tanzania.
Despite being nominated in 7 categories, the “Number One” hit maker took to social media to express his frustration over what he termed as killing local music,
“Ikiwa kweli tunalengo la kutoipotosha kimaadili jamii yetu na vizazi vyetu pendwa, nafikiri ni vyema tungeanza kuzuia Video na nyimbo za kutoka nje, kuliko kuzuia nyimbo na video za nyumbani ambazo uchafu wake haufikii hata robo ya ulioko kwenye nyimbo zinazopewa kipaumbele toka nje…….hii ni sawa na kuzidi kuukuza mziki wa nje huku tukiudidimiza na kuua mziki wetu…….will the target of reaching our goals ever be achieved?? #Ni_Mtazamo_Tu,” he posted on his instagram page.
Kenya's Jaguar has been nominated alongside Wyre, Uganda’s Chameleon, Radio and weasel for the best East African song.
The voting lines will be opened on the 1st of April until 31st of April where fans will have the liberty to vote online or through text.
