NIGERIA: Popular American Singer R Kelly Remixes Davido’s Song ‘If’

Weeks after  hinting there could be a remix of an African hit single by Nigerian star Davido, U.S pop star R Kelly has finally released his version of the hit single ‘IF’. He had earlier on released what was a teaser to the remix via his social media handles, which left many wondering whether the full track will be done.

 

Kiss Fm’s Jeff Mote spoke to Davido when he was in the country last week for an appearance at B-Club, seeking to find out how he feels about having a superstar do a remix to his song. Davido expressed delight saying he was eager for music lovers to listen to it when released.

 

Born Robert Sylvester Kelly,  R. Kelly is a popular American R&B singer, songwriter and record producer best known for his gospel-tinged vocals and highly sexualized lyrics.

 

Despite being plagued by numerous scandals that saw him charged with child pornography, R.Kelly is highly thought of and referred to as the “King of R & B”. He has several awards under his belt, enjoying success on the pop and R&B charts.

 

R Kelly has worked with artistes such as Jay-Z, Michael Jackson, Diddy and Notorious B.I.G. Some of his hit singles include The World’s Greatest, Step in the Name of Love, You Saved Me, When a Woman Loves, Storm is Over, Same Girl, Bump N Grind, Ignition, I’M a Flirt, Happy People, Fiesta and many more.

Davido, born David Adekele, is currently on what he calls the 30BillionTour, and Kenya was among the countries he is touring. In the interview with Jeff Mote, Davido also hinted that he could be planning a concert soon.

The almost 4-minute remix maintains the beats and transitions of the original Davido work, save for Kelly’s introductory bits. Then after one-and-half minutes, Kelly takes over with a rap that runs for over one-minute and forty seconds before Davido takes over with Kelly in the background.

The part Kelly raps is exactly where Davido sings about how he seeks to reassure his lover (by name Brigette) of his unending love promising her a cash sum of 30 billion (even though he didn’t specify whether dollars or naira) in her account plus designer wear for her.
