Opinion: Why artists should give back to their fans and society
10 March 2014
For the past few years the Kenyan music industry has witnessed enormous growth making it one of the most vibrant music industries in the region and Africa at large.
This immense growth has brought with it many benefits such as financial freedom, fame and success to our local artists who have struggled for a very long time trying to market their work out there and earn a living from their music.
However this growth could not have been possible without the support of the fans who are the major consumers of Kenyan content, these loyal fans have ensured the growth by attending music shows and buying music which transform into financial success to our industry.
Due to this huge support, our artists need to recognize that all this would not have been possible without the fans, therefore our musicians and everyone in the music fraternity needs to give back to the society and fans just as a way of showing appreciation.
Its been very encouraging to see how of late many of the big musicians in the country have come out to engage in community projects with an aim of giving back to the people not as publicity stunts but because they really had the urge to step in and be a solution to problems;
The godfather of Genge Nonini is known for his philanthropic ways, just recently he was in North Easter province distributing free sunscreen to Albino’s courtesy of his Color Kwa Face project that has been fighting against the discrimination of Albino’s in the region.
“Kioo” hit maker Jaguar is undoubtedly known to be one of the most giving artists in the country since his entry into music many years ago, he always donates materials where needed and lends a helping hand where he possibly can and this has always set him apart from some of the artists we have around.
Other artists include Octopizzo, Denno, Daddy Owen, Juliani and Eko dydda who have always made it their duty to be the voice of the vulnerable people in society.
As a die hard local music fan i can for sure say that this is a step in the right direction and such a wake up call to all other artists to join this awesome mission of giving back to the society; now don't get me wrong its not that i am saying that they have to do it but i just believe it is a good way of keeping them grounded and being a voice of the people with the major platform they hold.
