Artist of the day: Nikki Mbishi
5 March 2014
Nicas John Marwa Machuche; I don’t expect that to sound familiar to you at the moment but Nikki Mbishi surely does.
Not necessarily to many Hip-hop fans in Kenya but in Tanzania he’s a household name rocking the airwaves with lyrical prowess and mad skills in maintaining consistency in the Hip hop scene
The Dar es Salaam based artist rose to fame when he participated in a freestyle competition at Coco Beach in Tanzania that gave him the opportunity to work with M-Lab Records.
M-Lab (Music Laboratory) is a branch of Media Kings Tanzania Ltd, a company that deals with production of audio and video jingles, adverts, documentaries and PA systems.
Being a true emcee, Nikki hasn’t looked back since then and he released his debut album ‘Sauti Ya Jogoo’ which was received well in his home country. He’s now on his second album titled ‘Malcom XI’.
He broke into the Kenyan music scene when he featured Kayole’s finest Khaligraph Jones song ‘Baba Malcom na Baba Yao’ simply reffering to him an Khaligraph Jones .
Ever since his sign up with Mdundo, he has massively taken over the charts backed by his loyal supportive fans both in Tanzania and growing fan-base in Kenya, and he does not seem to be backing down anytime soon
“What I believe has helped me get to the top is the fact that I always share some of the killer lines from my songs on social media and I believe this creates a sense of curiosity in the fans who then search for my music as they try to figure out which song it is and they download”
“I am not really focusing on making money right now, my main focus is on building a loyal fan base and then I can focus on money later”
