Their style of music is influenced by a diverse number of rock and metal bands such as Metallica and Foo Fighters but this all boy rock band has managed to keep it local ; and being a part of a genre that is still not popular in Kenya they are doing quite well for themselves,
“One thing that did us a lot of good in helping us survive this industry was ‘localizing’ the content. Given that a lot of people associate rock with the West, it was very different for people to find Swahili lyrics in a rock song. We made a conscious decision to include Swahili lyrics in our music” they shared with Mdundo.
Parking Lot Grass widely known as PLG is the epitome of the rock culture in Nairobi and Kenya as a whole.
The band is comprised of five members and in an unfortunate turn of events, their lead singer quit earlier on this year but was quickly replaced .
Having been formed in 2010, the band had been performing at every given opportunity, spreading the band’s name and rock culture in Kenya; and towards the end of 2011, they changed their focus to recording music and were able to release EP ‘Shimo Mfukoni’ in early 2012.
“Etched on my heart” was their debut single and immediately thrust the talented band to the limelight; their second single ‘Speed Chaser’ was later released in Feb 2012 with the band now cementing their position in the rock scene in the country.
In 2012, the band was recognized and applauded for their work in revolutionizing the almost non-existence rock music industry and last year they placed the Kenyan rock scene on the international map by being the first ever Kenyan rock band to perform at 49 degrees metal zone in Germany, which is an international rock festival.
They are set to release their debut album in the course of this year and it is definitely something exciting to look forward to.
