Akon's enduring influence in the world of music cannot be overstated. With his chart-topping hits and unmistakable voice, he captured hearts and made the world dance to his rhythm. In Nigeria, a nation where music is life, Akon's songs were the soundtrack to countless stories, dreams, and adventures. His melodic journey from Senegal to the world's biggest stages echoed the aspirations of countless Africans, and it set the stage for a new chapter in his illustrious career.

As the 2000s rolled in, Akon's star shone brightly in Nigeria. His music transcended borders and language, touching souls in Lagos, Ibadan, and Kano. It was more than just catchy tunes; his songs provided solace, motivation, and a connection to the outside world. He may have been thousands of miles away, but he was deeply entrenched in the hearts of Nigerians. His songs not only entertained but also offered a window to a world beyond Nigeria's shores.

In a candid conversation with Akon, he revealed his deep connection to Nigeria and how he didn't fully comprehend the extent of his popularity until he started performing in African countries. "I kind of knew I was big in Africa, and Nigeria has always been supportive of my music, but I didn't properly understand just how big until I started performing in some countries," he confessed to Pulse Nigeria during an interview.

But Akon's journey didn't stop at simply being a beloved artist; he played a pivotal role in the internationalization of Afrobeats. In 2011, he joined forces with Nigerian superstars P-Square for the remix of their hit single 'Chop My Money.' It was a landmark moment that introduced Afrobeats to the Western mainstream. Few years later, Akon collaborated with Wizkid and Davido, even signing Wizkid to his Konvict Music label. He was instrumental in facilitating groundbreaking collaborations between Nigerian and American stars like T Pain and Rick Ross.

His unique position as both a global icon and a proud African set him apart. Akon's success was much more than just commercial achievements; it was an affirmation of African pride. In a time when Africans abroad often tried to mask their roots, Akon's unapologetic embrace of his African heritage was a beacon of hope.

Reggae and Dancehall music once dominated African diaspora communities in the West, to the extent that some Africans pretended to be Jamaican, distancing themselves from their own culture. Akon shared memories of this era, when being African was perceived as less cool. However, his willingness to embrace his identity as an African provided the impetus for change.

"Everything I touched was going number 1," Akon recalled, reflecting on the turning point in his career that saw his music and identity gain worldwide acceptance, making being African cool again.

Today, Afrobeats has transcended borders and is now a symbol of pride for Nigerians, Africans, and people worldwide. Superstars like Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Rema, and others have contributed to Afrobeats' global success, elevating Nigeria's soft power and cultural currency on the international stage.

Akon couldn't be prouder of his early role in opening international doors for Afrobeats. "To see African artists selling out stadiums across the world is so huge. To see that makes tears come down my eyes, just knowing we worked so hard to get to that point," he exclaimed.

Now, over a decade since his initial engagement with Afrobeats, Akon has come full circle with his latest project, 'Afro - Freak.' The EP explores Afrobeats and South Africa's Amapiano, further spotlighting African music. With the world's growing interest in Afrobeats, he aims to broaden global awareness by introducing audiences to the unique sounds of Amapiano, expanding the horizons of African music.

However, with Afrobeats' burgeoning international success, concerns have arisen about the genre following a trajectory similar to Dancehall. Dancehall, once a commercial juggernaut, lost its prominence as Western markets moved on to new sounds, leaving it without local structures. Akon shared a valuable piece of advice for Nigerian artists and the local industry.

"You can never be too big for the hometown." He emphasized the importance of artists maintaining strong connections with their roots and local institutions. The success of the music should not lead to artists abandoning the very industry that nurtured their talent.

As an Afrobeats ambassador and a globally influential figure, Akon's words hold weight. The vibrant Nigerian music industry can indeed learn from his guidance to ensure its continued growth and evolution.

While Akon's dedication to spotlighting Africa and its culture has made him an invaluable source for American media platforms seeking to understand the continent, it has also led to some criticisms. Akon has faced backlash from some who feel his intentions might be misconstrued as self-serving. However, he remains unfazed, viewing such criticism as part of the price to pay for the changes he envisions, just as it was for many who sought to drive notable social transformation throughout history.

In the midst of his dynamic career, Akon is also open to the possibility of expanding his influence beyond the music industry. He acknowledged the potential for change through political leadership, a domain he has previously resisted. He believes that real change can be achieved from positions of influence, signaling a potential foray into the political landscape.

As we wrapped up our conversation, Akon revealed a glimpse into his upcoming album, which he described as a fusion of the old and new Akon. Nearly two decades after his debut album, Akon remains relevant, not only for his hits but for the contributions he has made to the success of countless artists, particularly his pioneering role in Afrobeats' early international journey.

Akon's legacy in Nigeria and the global music scene is a testament to the enduring power of music to transcend borders, unite diverse cultures, and inspire change. His influence has left an indelible mark, shaping the Afrobeats movement and providing a bridge to connect Africa with the world. As a musician, an advocate for change, and a proud African, Akon's journey continues to inspire and uplift countless hearts and voices.
