While a lot has happened in the world of music, Yaw Sarpong defies time to remain Ghana’s face of gospel music. He wouldn’t trade his talent for impacting lives through gospel hits for anything.

In about 40 years that he has been in the industry, things have gotten better for his music and he is held in high regard as a religious ambassador. His musical roots went deeper in the 1980s when he lived with Prof Kofi Abraham. He recorded his first album in 1981 before relocating to Liberia in 1986 where he founded the popular Asomafo band which he is the leader of. Asomafo means ‘Messengers’ in English.

Yaw Sarpong was deep into the gospel and all he wanted was to be the man taking the word to the world through music. The band made up of Ghanaians, Liberians, and Sierra Leonians has stood the test of time to churn uplifting, classic gospel hits under Yaw Sarpong decades later. All in all, he has remained relevant in the industry. Here are Yaw Sarpong’s top 5 songs on Mdundo.

1. Wo Haw Ne Sen

The eight-minute long ‘Wo Haw Ne Sen’ remains a legendary song for Ghanaians. Yaw Sarpong in the past told Becky on E Vibes that he credits the song to Prophet Sundae who ran the Amangoase Prayer Centre.

Amangoase was a famous preacher in Ghana’s Ashanti region. The Ghanaian gospel legend recalls that it was during one of his visits to Prophet Sundae’s church that he got the inspiration to write down ‘Wo Haw Ne Sen’. It was an act of God speaking to him, and he heeded to the call. Hitherto, the single remains a big blessing to people’s lives. It has over 555K views on YouTube.

2. Tenabea Fofororo

From the album ‘Classics of Yaw Sarpong and the Asomafo’, this song did exceptionally well. It has a deep conviction on faith, and prayer subtly delivered in rather laid back vocals by Asomafo.

As is with most of his songs, ‘Tenabea Foforo’ is in Ghana's native language and the production in its simplistic nature delivers an outstanding worship song.

3. Hwan Na Adwendwen Da Noso

There is something magical about ‘Hwan Na Adwendwen Da Noso’, which is from Classics of Yaw Sarpong and the Asomafo album.  Perhaps, it is the rich saxophone and piano acoustics that enriches this hit besides the powerful message by Yaw Sarpong.

From the moment it starts, ‘Hwan Na Adwendwen Da Noso’ strikes differently. Let’s just say it has a deep conviction, and charm amplified by the background sounds. It has already surpassed 214K views on YouTube.

4. Mpaebo

You need not be told that this is a powerful praise and worship song. It doesn’t deviate much in terms of production and tune from his other top 4 colourful hits. In fact, the production of ‘Mpaebo’ makes it easy to mix other songs with the same tempo, and a complementary style. Over and above all, Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo teach Christians the power of prayer and thanksgiving in life.  One this one, the Yaw Sarpong and his messengers are more compelling – especially with the strums of the guitar.

5. Waye Awie

‘Waye Awie’ is undoubtedly among the best of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo. The key message is the gospel, and the need to always have a heart that trusts in God. The beautiful sounds of the guitar are more pronounced making it such a great hit to listen to.
