Mdundo is highlighting Evelyn Wanjiru as our Woman in Music today. Born in Nairobi in 1990, Evelyn is a talented singer, songwriter, worship leader and music director.

Evelyn is one of Kenya’s veteran gospel musicians and is known for her top hits that include; ‘Waweza’, ‘Tulia’, Nkufahamu’, ‘Mungu Mkuu’, ‘Celebrate’ and ‘Jehovah Elohim’ among others.

For the over ten years she has been in the industry, Evelyn has released five albums namely; ‘Waweza’(2012), ‘Mungu Mkuu (2015), ‘Matendo’ (2017), ‘Celebrate’ 2019 and ‘Mwanaga’ (2021).

She is one of the most decorated female musicians in the country having won over ten local and international awards.

Some of the top awards she has won include; 2016 Groove Award Worship Song of the Years thanks to ‘Nikufahamu’, 2016 Groove awards collabo of the year for ‘Tulia’ and 2015 Groove awards album of the year for ‘Mungu ni Mkuu’ among others.

Evelyn is married to producer Agundabweni Akweyu and together they founded a music and recording studio dubbed Bwenieve Productions.

Away from music, Evelyn is a businesswoman and runs a fashion house named Bwenieve clothesline.

Together with her husband, they also have a mentorship program where they train and nurture young musicians on the music industry and how to get the best out of it.

Evelyn has been instrumental in the growth of Kenyan gospel music and in so doing; she has inspired many young female musicians to pursue their dreams. For this, Mdundo celebrates and appreciates her as a true trail blazer.
