International Women's Month: Mdundo Women in Music Features Angélique Kidjo

Mdundo is highlighting Angélique Kpasseloko Hinto Hounsinou Kandjo Manta Zogbin Kidjo as our Woman in Music today. Originally from Benin, singer-songwriter, actress, and activist Angelique Kidjo was once  refered to by Time magazine as 'Africa's Premier Diva'.

Noting some of her most recent highlights; in September 2021 Time listed her among the 100 Most Influential People in the world. This followed her singing at the  Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, held earlier in July 2021.

As heard in her music diversity, Agelique speaks five languages fluently;  Fon, French, Yorùbá, Gen (Mina), and English and also has a song, 'Malaika' in Kiswahili.

Passionate for human rights, Angelique Kidjo has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2002. She is also the Founder of The Batonga Foundation aimed at empowering vulnerable, hard to reach young women in Benin. The programme equips these women with knowledge and skill to be agents of change for themselves and their communities. These are just 2 of her works in a long list of humanitarian advocacy projects she has played part in driving.
