Zambian record producer, composer, and vocalist Kekero has advised fellow producers how to earn good royalties for their work, stating that they should never accept one-time payment from an artist who they think has potential.

According to Kekero, songs get bigger and earn more over-time, therefore, by accepting one-time payment, you lock yourself from any future fortunes that may come with the song.

Additionally, Kekero advised producers to make sure they agree with the artist about their percentage on the song, and also demand for a copy of the agreement document.

A document called a ‘Split Sheet’ is used to distribute royalties. A split sheet is an agreement signed by the music's contributors, giving the personal details of the contributors and specifying their respective ownership portion in the song.

In this document, the percentage of each producer, writer, and performer's ownership of the song is laid down. He says that everyone in a song – producer, singer and songwriter all have a share of the royalties a song makes.

“What is certain is that everyone on the song, from the songwriter to producer and every featured artist ought to have a share of royalties,” he writes.
